Helen,
Those pictures are amazing. I think the phonetic spellings of the words for spices is totally how they should be spelled. English is whack. Learning foriegn languages (re: previous post) is a tenuous journey. In reflection on my summer at Midd, I realized that much of the time spent really learning productively was adjusting myself to the complexities of the person I became while speaking words I only recently began to understand. I became uncomfortable with my own voice and never could completely articulate the tension I experienced between expression in English and Russian. Its almost like becoming a completely different person. I am totally envious of your experiences in Cairo. Even if the Arabic hasn't progressed at the intensity you would like, it sounds like your cultural and social understanding has. Hopefully I'll get to see you in Charlotte over the winter break..
jeremy! mi amor! (by the way- I cannot imagine teaching next semester without you- Spanish class = Jeremy!) Jayanthi gets credit for the pictures- they are awesome, aren't they! I am not sure this is exactly what you are getting at, but it is certainly a strange experience to have different limitations on how you express yourself. You can't come across as the person you are in your head... so you do become someone else. The language changes the style of your speak and the pace and what goes through your head. You will see me over winter break, in sha Allah. I can't wait!
mmmmmmm
Even though I actually talked to you online about these photos, I have still returned to them hungrily many times.
Pfft, I went to the Luxor in Las Vegas. It was bigger. So there. :-)
Come home!
G-Unit!
